The history of the Sofia Mathematical High School began in 1879, when, at the insistence of the Minister of Education, the first secondary school for girls in Bulgaria was established. This was the so-called Women's Teachers' Seminary. In 1880, the school became a six-grade school and was now called the Girls' High School.
In 1896 and 1897, the then Minister of Education Konstantin Velichkov carried out a reform, as a result of which the Girls' Gymnasiums became seven-grade with two courses - lower and upper. Due to the increased number of female students, it was necessary to open a second branch of the gymnasium - one was located on Sredna Gora Street, and the other - on Lege.
In 1904, the school on Lege Street became an independent high school – the Second Girls' High School. Its address changed many times, with the directorate and office located in a building at 36 Iskar Street. The current address of the SMG is 61 Iskar Street.
